When an application asks for work experience, can I put aiding work as "experience"?

March 52010

I’ve worked one job, but the application asks for three. Can I put all work "experience", aka volunteering, or maybe even aiding for my high school office, as work experience, or should they be actual jobs? And does work for my father as an office aide count, when I did get paid, or is that considered more chores than anything else?

Thanks haha. As you can tell I’m new to this all. :P

Yes, you can use volunteer postions and helping out in your school office. Working for family counts as well.

How do i get job experience when no one wants to hire ?

March 52010

I’m trying to get a computer job because i have my a+ certificate. However, everywhere i go, i see must have a number of years experience in that field. How do i get that experience if no one is willing to hire? I’ve seen sum pretty dumb techs out there and i get angry because they have the jobs and i don’t. This makes no sense.

Have you tried temping? It’s a great way to get experience and if you do really well at the job, you may be hired full-time. Check out the temporary employment agencies in your area. Some specialize in office work, others in manual labor, others in home care workers. The list goes on and on. And employers are starting to hire temps again. They are reluctant to hire full-time employees without knowing whether or not they will fit into their company, so they want to start out with temps. And good luck in your job search.

What does "professional experience" entail?

March 52010

I just graduated c.u.m. laude with a degree in communications after 3 years. I have working in journalism for the past 7, including editor of high school and collegiate newspapers and yearbooks.

This is the job I am looking at:
"Bachelor’s degree required in Journalism, English or related field and 2+ years of professional writing experience required."

In this case, is "professional writing experience" meaning I had to get paid for it? Or is it more along the lines of "We want you to know what it’s like to be on a deadline."

I am a HR Manager, and I can tell you that what we say we want and who we hire can be two different things.

Professional experience usually means “exempt level experience”. That being said, you should apply anyways. No harm if you do, and you might pass up something good if you don’t.

Make sure to highlight your school paper experience.

Good Luck

How can I get experience at writing grant proposals for nonprofit organizations? Everyone wants experience.?

March 52010

I want to help other people, and I think that I would be very good at grant writing (I would be comfortable with the numbers side of it, meaning the schedules, etc.). Of course, one can buy a book on the subject, and that might not be a bad idea. But the big break would be for someone to say "Okay, so you really do not have any experience, but you seem very motivated. I will work with you to put actual grants together."

Is all of this asking too much. I am willing to do this on a volunteer basis, preferably "virtually" from home.

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

I know of a great organization that might be interested in providing you the opportunity you seek. Send an email to vice-president@kidsdefenseteam.com . This is an organization that advocates child safety online. You seem to have a good heart and the desire. I wish you well.

Is E=MC2 program (uni experience for gifted high school) benefiticial for applying to university?

March 52010

There’s a program at Queens University called E=MC2. It’s for academic students in high school, and you stay in res. to get the uni experience and take uni courses. I’m wondering if this type of program would be beneficial to me at all when applying to university?

I say any experience with higher courses while you are still in Highschool will look good on your resume and application.

Exotic car driving experience, where can I get that in LA?

March 52010

I wanted to do a one day track driving experience with either a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or an Aston Martin DB9. Can anyone direct me to a site of a company that offers this in LA
Its a gift for my brother, I wanted to send him to like a track day training school like the ones they have in the UK. I dont mind spending like 2 grand.

I’ve used these guys before for a birthday gift. Less than you mentioned at 2 grand. These guys are about 1 grand plus a couple of bucks a mile. Be careful. Easy to go grand touring at 2 bucks a mile. :-) Have fun!

No track courses that I know of or can find. Your only alternative would be to rent the car and a track. The insurance on the car would probably be cost prohibitive where this is concerned, but then again for me, so is the daily rate. Was a one time thing for me.

PS, get the Modena. :-)

Here is from the site:

Rates

Unfortunately we do have to charge money to drive our cars

- Lamborghini Gallardo – $995 per day, 100 miles included
$2.00 per mile each additional

- Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder – $995 per day, 100 miles included
$2.00 per mile each additional

- Ferrari 360 Modena – $995 per day, 100 miles included
$2.00 per mile each additional

- Ferrari F355 Spider – $749 per day, 100 miles included
$2.00 per mile each additional

- Bentley Continental GT – $995 per day, 100 miles included
$2.00 per mile each additional

- Mercedes E55 AMG – $349 per day, 100 miles included
$2.00 per mile each additional

Policies

We want you to have as much fun as possible, but we do have a few policies in place for everyone’s safety:

Damage deposit
This is to cover items like scratched paint, dented bumpers, smoked tires or brakes, ink stains on the leather, etc.

$2,000 damage deposit is authorized on your credit card, or paid in cash for the Ferrari

$1,000 damage deposit is authorized on your credit card, or paid in cash, for the Mercedes

Auto Insurance
Full coverage auto insurance is required – we can check on this for you and it won’t cost you anything. 99% of people’s existing insurance policies allow them to drive rental cars. Just give us your agent’s name and number and we’ll take care of it.

FAQ

This is L.A. – anything’s possible. We’ll do our best!

One last note: They aren’t kidding about all the stuff they offer on the side. And one other note, ALL driving in LA is "track driving"…. :-)

Why would you vote for someone with only 143 days of experience?

March 52010

From the time Obama was sworn in as a Senator. He has logged a total of 143 days as a voting member of the senate. The rest of the time he has been campaigning for President. With his sordid back ground, he would not qualify for a security clearance in the military.

I don’t think you get it-the mindless followers DO NOT CARE. They are Manchurian candidates brainwashed by the liberal media. Please try to understand that I know it is hard. But have you just come into this forum? They are psycho. They are voting for him for no APPARENT reason.

Has anyone had bad experiences with pet sitters, especially ones who are uninsured and unlicenced?

March 52010

Am at present in dispute with a sitter and am wondering how many other people have gone through similar experiences. Am particularly interested in pet sitters who are uninsured and unlicenced (required for all pet sitters who use their own home in UK). Am trying to gain enough info on peoples experiences to start a campaign for some form of regulation to come into place. Let me know your stories. Thanks.

I really hope that they never have any kind of regulations on pet-sitting here. When I was a kid, I spent all my free time pet/house/baby-sitting and I really do feel that it helped me develop a sense of responsibility and a love for animals in particular. Besides, requiring pet-sitters to be licensed would make it technically illegal for you to ask a friend or family member to sit your pets for you. What a can of worms!

I have never had any trouble with pet sitters. If you screen them properly, it really should never be an issue. However, I HAVE had trouble with people I pet-sat FOR who made false accusations and outright LIED in order to get out of paying me for the work I did. When it comes to sitting, it’s the sitter who gets the raw end of the deal more often than not.
