What kind of work experience do I include in an application to be a teacher?

May 252010

I’m applying online for a substitute teaching job, and there is a section to list previous work experience. I’m going to include my dance teaching job because it pertains to children. But I don’t know if I should include working as a computer lab assistant in college or as a sales associate at American Eagle, both of which I presently do.

Will listing those jobs help or hinder me?

I can’t see how they would hinder you. Both jobs would show that you have skills in management, which you definitely need to work with students. Also they show that you have a variety of skills you can use when stepping into a classroom, can work with different people, and you have good work ethics.

The only reason I can’t see you putting those on your application would be in a case where you think the person you use as a reference might not speak highly of you.

Just lie and say you worked a great deal with kids. I have teachers in my family, believe me, it works. Sunday School teacher is always a good one.
