i am applying for a job at outback in rochester mn and i am 17 as a hostess. ive never had a job before and alot of the questions ask about your previous jobs and im not exactly sure what to put for those or should i just leave them blank? also i printed the application off line and how would i turn it in? should i go to there and ask to speak with the manager? how should i go about doing this?

As a young hostess, experience isn’t a must. Now if you were applying for bartender with no experience thats a different story. Any where you go you will be trained to do the job you are hired to do. I’ve been a server and bartender for 9 years. Everyone has to start somewhere and hosting is great. I’ve also found it sometimes easier to train people with NO experience versus years of experience because those who have done it before are stuck in the mind frame of previous jobs and aren’t willing to forget what they knew and listen to what is being asked of them. So leave the experience blank and lines where it asks special skills or something similar, put things about your personality that would make you a great host, i.e. outgoing, people-person, organized, punctual, accountable.

The online application? I don’t know, i’ve never done that. I’ve just gone into restaurants asked for an application, FILL IT OUT THERE, and hand it to a manager. I guess what you could do, since your showing initiative by looking up the job and printing an application is fill it out at home, take it to outback between 2-4 (best time to apply at ANY restaurant) ask to see a manager hand it to him and be prepared to talk to and interview with them. Wear nice clothes, this is your first and maybe only impression, do it right!

Do colleges have a system to know whether or not you have attended somewhere else and force you to show your transcript?

no, the admissions people don’t really have any system to check but financial aid will know for sure if you have ever received any type of financial aid at another school. I am gonna assume you didn’t do so well at the previous school and that is why you don’t want to claim it. Well, my sister had the same problem so she went and talked to the admissions people (they really do want to help you) and they told her that she could do a one time fresh start where they would completely disregard her previous college experience and grades. That doesn’t make it go away everywhere else but for this particular school, it would be like it never happened. I would be honest because if they find out that you lied you will get kicked out and may not be able to get into another good school after that.

I am 21 and have never worked before and I am applying for a position as a cook. How bad does that hurt my chances of getting hired?

Also, on the application, it is asking for business references — but I have none. Do I just leave that blank?
Ha-ha. No, I wasn’t in jail or anything.

I have an associates degree (if that matters). It’s a bit irrelevant, though.

If you don’t have any business references, then use either:

– sports team coaches
– guide/scout leader
– former teacher
– former volunteer coordinator
–former priest or church person

Do NOT use family or friends as references.

i am applying right after college. what kind of work experience can i get while i am in college to help my application.i thought about getting certified as nurse assistant and work part-time but i don’t know if it would be relative. do i need specific experience or just any medical related work experience.????

The more patient care you can get the better. A CNA job will offer limited experience actually for PA school (as you do not do much nursing in PA school) but it is better than nothing. CMA experience is better, but the schooling is longer. Try also to volunteer in someplace like the ER as you will see procedures and medical practice in action which will be invaluable, and you can ask questions. Most Docs are happy to teach; also try for one where PAs work. Also, you can try for a job as a lab assistant and try & learn all you can about why tests are ordered and the physiology involved.

The reason you need quality experience is that there is way too much medical knowledge to absorb in the 2 years you have for PA school (think med school at half the time) so any knowledge you enter with makes it all that muck easier to learn, grasp, and be comfortable around patients. Try to get as much as you can.

I’m applying online for a substitute teaching job, and there is a section to list previous work experience. I’m going to include my dance teaching job because it pertains to children. But I don’t know if I should include working as a computer lab assistant in college or as a sales associate at American Eagle, both of which I presently do.

Will listing those jobs help or hinder me?

I can’t see how they would hinder you. Both jobs would show that you have skills in management, which you definitely need to work with students. Also they show that you have a variety of skills you can use when stepping into a classroom, can work with different people, and you have good work ethics.

The only reason I can’t see you putting those on your application would be in a case where you think the person you use as a reference might not speak highly of you.

I have been out of High School 10 years and had a lot of jobs during HS and a few after. I don’t have phone numbers and places have gone out of business. I can’t remember supervisor names etc…. Do I really need to list those little jobs?

10 years is the max for listing employers; any employment less than a month doe not need to be listed, unless listing will be beneficial to getting the position you are seeking :}
