Thanks

It will be MUCH harder for you (why didn’t anyone tell you that you should have gotten an internship earlier?), but people like you do find jobs in business. First of all, go to your school’s placement center; they should be able to get you started. As far as sites go, I currently really like www.indeed.com, which has a search engine that pulls job postings from other sites, but I also use www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com, www.yahoohotjobs.com, and some specialty sites like www.entertainmentcareers.net and www.teamworkonline.com for our students as well as the search engine on my LinkedIn site.

I graduated college last Feb., got a great job, and found out I was pregnant. 4 months into the job I had to quit from complications of the pregnancy. My baby is now 5 months old and I am wanting to go back to work really bad!! Only problem is, nobody wants to hire me because I’ve only had 4 months of real world job experience. How can I get them to even consider me for an inteview?? I think if I could just get an interview, I could secure a job. Thanx for any advice!!

Firstly identify the skills you have…makes no difference if they are job field specific or not…humans hire people because they bring value to what they do. Most employers are looking for folks with "transferrable skills"…you have many of them.

Secondly, begin to network like crazy. Identify everyone you can who is in the field you want to be in and just meet them…let them know your looking but you don’t expect them to know of any jobs for you…you just want info…this is powerful and it works. I am a career counselor at a major mid-western university since 1985 and this is the most powerful networking method out there.
Go to:http://www.jobhuntersbible.com and learn how to network; also go to http://www.personality-power-for-everyday-living.com and take the free Myers-Briggs test there and match yourself up with a perfect career match based upon your never changing personality…you will also find many helps there regarding job search.

Don’t pigeon hole yourself into thinking you need tons of experience for an entry level job…you don’t and the more you network you won’t be competing with every one who is only answering the want ads…..the biggest reason employers take out want ads is because they don’t already know of someone who can do the work…..network and let them find you!
Alll the best!

Maybe a local job agency could help as a lot of employers use them for recruitment. That’s how the Health and Safety manager at my work place found his job, and I went through same agency for mine (different area of the business) so it worked for us.-) Good luck.

I want to work at this payroll company for at least a year first, but I’m not sure if it’ll be good enough experience to apply for a financial analyst position. I’ll be getting my Finance degree soon and it’s been 8 months since I’ve been working there. Can you please tell me if I should seek another job that’s more related to Finance or is this position fine?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

May, if you are working at a payroll compnay, that’s certainly giving you some technical skills in processing payroll, but a financial analyst typically has a little bit more exposure to analyzing financial statements, but don’t despair…stay where you are for a year, finish your degree, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look around and test the waters. You could certainly send out some applications to see what the response is….

I would like to know how to write a resume since I have no job experience.

Let’s look at what you *have* done. If you have done an internship, that should be listed. If you’ve been an active member of some club or organization (in school or otherwise), the type of member work you did should be listed. If you have been part of some nonprofit, volunteer organization, that should be listed.

Put these in chronological order.

You’ll want to describe what you did under the name of the organization. Do not make the description a shopping list of job functions and duties. Show things you did that had an impact on what was happening. If you led the group in doing something, discuss how many were part of the group and what the group accomplished. If you came up with a novel idea of getting something done or saved the day in some regard, list that and how much was saved — or earned.

What skills you have should also be listed under another section. If you are looking for photography work, the types of cameras you know how to use, whether you can develop film, lenses you use, special techniques should be listed. This is similar to listing a typing speed if it is of interest to those who would be evaluating your resume, as well as any IT skills (HTML coding, graphic work, knowledge of Excel or PowerPoint).
