What does a professional author put down as job experience?

If a fairly or semi successful author has been writing full time for a while but suddenly falls out of luck in that area, and needs to apply to some hourly job or something like that, what do they put as job experience and who are their employers? The publisher?

Do employers even consider authoring valid job experience? Maybe the answer is a little obvious, but this just seem weird to me…

Well, what do you think any self-employed person does? They write down what they did, ie ‘writer’ and under ‘employer’ they put ’self-employed’. That doesn’t just apply to authors; it applies to anyone who’s been self-employed or run their own business or worked on a freelance basis.

Whether an employer considered it valid work experience would depend totally on what kind of job then person was applying for. But bear in mind that you’ve been writing full-time, enough to make a living wage, you would be proven to be hard-working and self-motivated.

Newport girls work experience at Harper

Directed by Harriet Boxley, year 10, Newport Girls’ High School, Shropshire.
Six students from Newport Girls’ High School have spent the past week on work experience at Harper Adams.
The girls worked in different departments at the University College to experience what is expected of them in a job, and to understand what it is like to apply for one.
Most year ten students, aged 14-15, have been working at different locations across the country as part of the curriculum, and the girls have spent their week working in areas such as finance, the farm, business, laboratories and the Companion Animals Unit while at Harper.
Harriet Boxley, age 14, has spent her time working in the press office with Communications Manager, Janine Heath. She said: “I applied for work experience at Harper Adams, because I am interested in a career in both animation and design in film, or in wildlife conservation.
“Harper has a wide range of different work experience options, so I thought it would be a great place to spend my time.”
Harriet, from Newport, has helped to direct a news video by interviewing her peers and editing the footage. She has also produced a photographic storyboard, explaining step-by-step how to handle a bearded dragon for the first time.

Do you have to put every job experience on your resume? What about government jobs?

I got fired from one job when i was 18; not for job performance but attendance. I missed 3 allotted days within an 9 month period. Which is really crazy in my opinion because things happen (Illness and random events) and I was an excellent worker, my manager even cried when he fired me. I am thinking about applying for government jobs. Do i need to put that one bad experience…. I feel like its a big stain on my life; I pride myself in doing a great job in all areas of life.

That all depends on how old you are now and how long ago it is since you got fired. If that instance is more than 5 years ago and especially if it was your first job, then I would omit it from the resume. What most employers are looking for is a continuous work history, without lengthy gaps in it.

On the other hand if you have NOT continuously worked for at least 5 years, go ahead and list it. Hopefully they don’t ask for the reason why you left the job. But if they do, admit you were fired and you may attach an explanatory statement with a single paragraph not to exceed 6 lines in length. Then give the name and phone number of the manager who fired you, but can attest to your job performance as a good worker. You may also give that manager a call beforehand and tell him/her that you are listing his/her name as a job reference with their permission.

Luisa’s Experience – Closed (Endonasal) Rhinoplasty to Correct Deviated Septum & Improve Breathing

PREOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS:
Nasal obstruction secondary to turbinate hypertrophy, narrow middle vault, right rim narrowing and deviated septum.

PROCEDURE:
Endonasal (Closed) Rhinoplasty

•Repair of nasal vestibular stenosis secondary to right external valve collapse secondary to right alar rim weakness with placement of right alar rim graft.
•Repair of bilateral nasal vestibular stenosis secondary to bilateral internal valve collapse secondary to narrow/subluxed upper lateral cartilages with placement of bilateral spreader grafts.
•Complex septal reconstruction, submucous resection with major partial vomerectomy for correction of deviated nasal septum.
•Submucous resection and partial resection of right inferior turbinate.
•Submucous resection and partial resection of left inferior turbinate.

FINDINGS:
Weak right alar rim causing collapse, right deviated septum with caudal deviation, bilateral narrow middle vault.

COMMENT:
Post-op photos reveal softer nasal appearance. Patient has experienced improvement in breathing and is still healing.
