What comes first on a resume: education or experience?

April 42010

I am rewriting my resume and I don’t know which of these come first education or experience. Some people tell me that experience comes first since I haven’t been in school since 2005. However, there are others who tell me that education comes first since I never had a full time job (currently working part time) and will be going back to school to finish my studies and will be looking for something that is my industry. So, which of these comes first?

2 important questions to answer yourself:

1. Is your educational background or work experience more impressive? Describe the more impressive one first.

2. Is the future employer looking for a worker with work experience or theoretical knowledge? Tell him what he wants to know first.

How should I include volunteer experience on my resume?

April 22010

How should I go about including any volunteer experience on my resume? Should I include it in my ‘experience’ section where I talk about my previous jobs? There is only one volunteer experience that I am going to put on there, so would it be wrong to put it with my other jobs and just list on there that I was a volunteer with the organization?

If you did this volunteer experience for a long period of time listing it with your previous jobs would be acceptable and indicate volunteer in the pay section. Or you can list it separately as a paragraph all by itself, where you describe the position and your experience.
Title it: Volunteer Experience
Most importantly, don’t go on and on as the person reading the resume usually looks for highlights that indicate what they are looking for. If you address the issues they are seeking, you will be called for an interview.

How do I put internship experience in my resume?

March 312010

I’m in the process of writing my resume and I have internship experience. I was wondering if I put it in the resume just like a regular work experience. Also, should I put it above my current job or underneath it because it’s over (I did the internship while working my regular job).

Thanks!

There isn’t one right way to write a resume (there are a lot of wrong ways!), so it really depends on how you’re planning on organizing your resume. You can organize everything chronologically (which would put your internship below your current job), break things up into "Relevant Experience" and "Additional Experience," or even sort things by skills or positive personal attributes. Whatever proves to be the most effective vehicle for your experience is the best structure for your resume.

As for your internship, definitely include it as work experience, but also make sure to highlight that it was an internship. Here is a Monster.com article about creating resumes:

What do I put on an application/ resume for work experience when I have no formal work experience?

March 292010

All I have is an internship on a political campaign and some babysitting experience and community service. I have a high school diploma and one semester of college as far as education. Everything else I have is just from hobbies or is self-taught. How do I have a full resume and make it stand out when this is all I have to work with? Please help!

I’ll try and help you with this.

First you will want to make a profile for yourself so at the beginning of your resume have Profile. Don’t use Objective or Summary of skills. Just plain Profile

So below Profile we want a few (3 or 4) Highlights of you. Perhaps you have knowledge of MS Office so perhaps we can type something like this for you since you have worked for a political campain. Keep it factual though.

Knowledge of MS Office; strong interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills; experienced with the
demands of a 24/7 workplace.

Or something like this.

Record of consistently meeting deadlines; organized and self-directed.

So in your Profile you want to HIGHLIGHT yourself.

Next you will have something like. Areas of Experience/Skills

In this section you will list some of your experiences and relevant skills pertaining to the positiion you want. Keep it in point form and have 6 – 12 of these. If you have used an RF scanner put in "RF Scanner" if you have experience or relevant training in 5s or Six Sigma then put that in. We’ll get more in detail with some of your Experience/Skills later.

Next you will have a "Training" section.

In this section you will put every piece of training you have had. Keep it in point form and list as many as you can think of. It doesn’t matter if it is relevant to the job now or not. This will show employers that your willing to learn.

Next you will put in your "Experience" You will want to start your experience off with a short paragraph before you get into the nuts and bolts of your experience.

Have you ever received an award for something you have done when working on the political campain? Or during your community service? If so then write something like. "6 months of award winning service" Blah blah blah. and just touch on some of the things you did and show that you progressed in your role.

Now you will type in your employer with dates of service. Just below that you will type your "title" or position held. Here is the rule I have and it seems to work for me.

First Employer or Most recent have 5 highlights on how you did your job. 2nd most recent have only 2-3 highlights. and the 3rd have a short sentence. Anything after that I would just write the "employer, dates and job title" with NO highlights unless it is something that is completely relevant to the position being applied for.

Then below that tell the reader "How you did your job" rather than "what" you did. Recruiters already know from reading your job title "What you did" They are interested in "how" you did it. Make 3-6 points per employer or service. Try to keep it "aimed" towards the position being applied for. If you applying for a manufacturing job and your back ground is political then you will have to put some points in your "Experience/Skills" section that will show perhaps some hand and power tools that you have used.

Basically put you will find that you have 5 different resumes aimed towards different fields. I know I have at least that many but it’s basically all the same.

Now after you have finished putting in your experience you will add your Education. Now I have a college education however I only have it listed on resume’s that are for a particular field. I’m a Gas Technician by trade however I don’t have that education listed on a resume for a "WareHouse" position. As recruiters will see that and think right away that I’m going there for the "short term" and then I don’t get an interview.

It’s something I bring up at the interview and let it be known that I do have a college education and I have no interest in pursuing my field choice because I found my heart wasn’t into it and if my heart isn’t into that field than I’m not going to succeed at it. Recruiters love hearing stuff like that.

Now I do have my education listed on resumes for positions in the Automotive sector as it shows employers that I have at least a general understanding of the manufacturing and build process as well as I have enough intellect to learn new skills.

From there you are done. Try to keep it to one page if you can. If you can’t then I suggest condensing it or take away some info from your "experience" section.

Sorry this is long winded however if you need any info or help then don’t hesitate to message me.

What is the best way to include limited college experience on a resume?

March 272010

If someone needs to make a resume but failed out of college and has since been fairly successful in sales, what is the best way to include college experience in the resume? I’ve heard some college is better than none, which makes sense, but including the college information may result in some difficult questions. How can the sales experience be emphasized? Can some sort of addendum be included with a resume in such cases to offer an explanation of the past? Thanks!

I am a professional resume developer and this is how I deal with someone with some college experience, but no degree.
Example:

EDUCATION:

Business courses, Stonehill College, Easton, MA

You simply include the general course of study and the college that you attended. Do not include the attendance time frame.
Don’t include an addendum, as it will only serve to focus on the education issue. Never answer a question that has not been asked.
If the question as to schooling arises during the interview process, you might say something like, "I found it necessary to join the workforce." That is true, but ambiguous enough that it can indicate a lack of funds, family issues, or whatever.
Don’t indicate to a potential employer that the door to further education is closed, either. You never know when you may find your calling and decide to go back to school.
I was a 10th grade drop out but I went back to school in my 40’s and graduated summa cum laude, so you just never know.
You can emphasize your success in sales by detailing your accomplishments in that area. If you cannot afford to pay a resume developer, there are many good resume books at the public library.

Good luck. I’m sure you’ll do fine.

How should I arrange the experience on this resume?

March 252010

I’m about to apply to substitute teach and need to revamp my resume. All of my teaching experience including student teaching, teaching outside of a school setting, and earning my certificate took place 10 years ago. My experience over the last 10 years has been out of the teaching realm. How should I arrange the experience on my resume? Should I totally leave out the things I’ve done over the last 10 years that do not relate to teaching? Thanks.

You should definitely include the past experience, even if it isn’t directly related to teaching. Depending on what you’ve done, any duties that are transferable to teaching would be good. If you’d like my services, please visit my website.
