how to get coach driving experience?
March 312010
my boyfriend who currently is a self employed driving instuctor for many years, has recently passed his licence to become a coach driver. he now has a PCV, class D licence and he is trying to get a job as a coach driver, however because he has no experience he is finding it difficult for coach companies to offer him a job. therefore can anyone tell me how he goes about getting more coach driving experience so he is able to get a job with coach companies?
He could maybe try the local service bus company, like First bus or Stagecoach.
good luck to him, and be prepared for long hours and not seeing him for days if he’s away on a trip.

start with small local family run companies. a lot of coach driving is seasonal &/or casual employment they will keep you on their books & use you as required.
school buses, special needs & local authourity contracts are bred & butter to coach operators.this is where novices start.VIP,executive charter & european long haul are for the time served drivers usually relatives of the coach operator.

Oh dear! Like the first answer says, be prepared not to see him too much as coach work is long hours, lowish pay and very tiring. But in order to get some experience in, I’d advise him to see a driving agency who specialise in farming out drivers to companies who are experiencing staff shortages, this will give him very wide experience in the coach and bus industry and after a couple of years, he will be able to virtually pick who he wants to work for! As long as he prepared for a lot of long hours and hard work! If I were him, I’d have stayed a driving instructor!
