I sat plenty of pets in my childhood and I never seemed to have a problem. I wouldn't ever let a stranger come into my house and watch my pets though. I worked as a vet tech and we all pet sat on the side. People preffered to have us techs babysit because we knew what the pets needed and if anything were to happen we could easily access a vet or take care of them. Try going to your vet next time and see if someone would like to petsit on the side if you cannot board them with the vets. Or next time write out an agreement and both sign it.
References :
I really hope that they never have any kind of regulations on pet-sitting here. When I was a kid, I spent all my free time pet/house/baby-sitting and I really do feel that it helped me develop a sense of responsibility and a love for animals in particular. Besides, requiring pet-sitters to be licensed would make it technically illegal for you to ask a friend or family member to sit your pets for you. What a can of worms!

I have never had any trouble with pet sitters. If you screen them properly, it really should never be an issue. However, I HAVE had trouble with people I pet-sat FOR who made false accusations and outright LIED in order to get out of paying me for the work I did. When it comes to sitting, it's the sitter who gets the raw end of the deal more often than not.
References :
A friend of mine hired a dog sitter to stay in her house with her two dogs. The sitter was warned not to let them off the lead when out walking. One day the sitter let a friend walk the dogs, the friend let them off and one of the dogs got knocked down by a car..luckily he was alright but it cost a lot in vet expenses and my friend cut her holiday short when she heard about it. I think some sort of regulations would clarify the position for both pet owners and sitters, make it a more formal engagement and set down terms for both parties. Good idea:)
References :
Yes, I have. I had a pet sitter come to my home to watch my animals while I went on vacation to Cancun for two weeks. When we got back we found our animals without ANY water and there were dog feces and urine all over the house. I was furious with her and refused to pay her.
References :
I wouldn't use a pet sitter. I don't fancy having a stranger in my house. Whenever I go away my family looks after my cat
