All turtles are …
All turtles are picky eaters! There is no such thing as a species that consistently eats commericially prepared food. It’s an individual thing! And all reptiles grow their entire lives so all that start small will grow! It’s simply the rate and probable groth that can be compared, not a gaureentee that they won’t become bigger

According to …
According to Austin’s Turtle Page, male easterns can attain a length of 4 – 6″ while females can reach anywhere from 6 – 8″. Does someone here have Turtles of the United States and Canada or Peterson’s Field Guide to verify the max adult size of male eastern painted turtles?

Male WESTERNS ( …
Male WESTERNS (Chrysemys picta belli) may reach 8″, but I’ve never seen a male eastern (C. p. picta) get that big. According to Russ Gurley’s Keeping & Breeding Freshwater Turtles, “adult female painted turtles grow to 12″ with adult males considerably smaller, usually 5″ to 6″. Gurley wasn’t distinguishing between subspecies but it’s common knowledge that westerns are the largest & southerns are the smallest.

It’s not the turtle …
It’s not the turtle that’s expensive, it’s the tank and filter and lights and vet if the turtle gets sick. The cheapest turtles in the world are the ones that get big and end up costing the most in habitats.
February 19th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
No, turtles do not …
No, turtles do not grow to the size of their environment! They get the size they are supposed to be as adults if given proper care! A female slider will be 8 -12″ if you care for it properly, no matter how small the tank.
February 19th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
If you bought a …
If you bought a baby green turtle, it’s probably a slider and WILL get big with proper care. There is no such thing as a “mini” turtle. They all get to be at least 3″, most get to be 4-10″ depending on species.
February 19th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
A good rule of …
A good rule of thumb is roughtly 10 gallons of tank per inch of turtle. Some of the muds can be kept OK in a 20 long, but a 30 long or 40 breeder is better. A male eastern painted would be OK in a 40 breeder. NO turtle can live permanently in a 10 gallon, and most need something larger than a 20.
February 19th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
It depends on the …
It depends on the type of musk, and type of painted. Razorbacks are larger than stinkpots. Female painteds get larger than males, from 5-10″ for a female, depending on subspecies. Western painteds are the largest of the four painted subspecies.
